Settlement Music School is seeking a passionate advocate to lead the launch of a new Initiative for young musicians from communities who are traditionally underrepresented in professional symphony orchestras. The PMAY Artists’ Initiative will be sponsored and managed by 10 PMAY organizations, which will collaboratively identify a cohort of these young Artists and jointly support them along a pathway towards musical mastery. Settlement will serve as the re-granting institution for this cohort of organizations, and the PMAY Artists’ Intiative Manager will lead a group of designated Student Advocates in the holistic support of the PMAY Artists at every step along their musical and developmental journeys. The PMAY Artists’ Initiative Manager reports to the Director of Strategic Initiatives.

What the job entails:

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the entire cohort of PMAY Artists, their identities as orchestral musicians, their motivations and inspirations, and the challenges they must overcome to be successful
  • Lead, inspire, motivate and support PMAY’s Student Advocates to act as a team of caring adults; lead frequent and regular case review sessions and meetings
  • Serve as Student Advocate for Settlement’s PMAY Artists; build strong relationships with them and their families and design and manage Personalized Learning Plans in collaboration with each Artist
  • Lead Student Advocates in the design and continuous refinement of tools to support the project, such as but not limited to a shared set syllabi of leveled repertoire for all orchestral instruments, personalized learning planning tools, and a process for ongoing identification and recruitment of students
  • Ensure that all PMAY Artists are meeting their requirements for progress
  • Develop and manage process for dispensing shared funds to PMAY Artists for summer study
  • Lead Student Advocates in planning annual learning opportunities for PMAY Artists, their families, and their teachers
  • Work with experts to design a customized data management system to support progress monitoring of PMAY Artists

We are seeking someone who possesses:

  • Deep understanding of the challenges standing in the way of true equity in education, and a belief in the power of arts education to mold young leaders
  • Strong experience in leadership of young people, their families, and like-minded educators
  • Musical training, preferably in orchestral music, and an understanding of how to attain musical mastery
  • Capacity for working with families and students to overcome cultural, financial, and other barriers standing in the way of student achievement
  • An indefatigable preference for collaboration in work
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in music or music education or commensurate experience in creative youth development
  • 3+ years of experience in youth program development and management
  • Knowledge in the field of community arts education
  • Strong writing skills
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
  • Ability to be an outstanding advocate of Settlement’s and PMAY’s mission
