The Carnegie Museum of Art is seeking a Part-Time Community Artist. The Community Artist operates in community locations extending Carnegie Museum of Art as a resource through its capacity to involve people in experiences with art. The position should achieve a level of integration within the community that will develop and nurture genuine, mutually-beneficial relationships that have the best interests of the community at heart. Activities typically revolve around regularly occurring art making or art activities that respond to community needs and interests.

The Community Artist should nurture a positive presence in the community through the program, welcome participation, and engage participants first-hand in discovering art as a resource for understanding human experience and strengthening personal agency. Programs may capitalize on opportunities to experience collections, exhibitions, and activities of CMOA including visits to CMOA as relevant and appropriate.

The Community Artist must be able to operates with little direct supervision to devise and conduct art experiences that appeal to the community audience, he/she will also be in frequent communication with the Curator of Education for oversight and will coordinate with the host agency. The Community Artist manages the program according to an agreed upon program budget and procedures, and maintains supplies and equipment. The Community Artist documents program activity for grant reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must be a practicing visual artist with relevant experience in community-based art programming. Must have demonstrated ability to devise and implement art experiences for youth or adults including oversight of administrative responsibilities including budget and scheduling.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Strong understanding of issues in contemporary art, especially social practice art, required. Must have demonstrated success working in community settings especially with audiences with limited access to art and museums. Highly organized with well-developed ability to carry out objectives independently. Strong interpersonal, relationship-building skills, and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must travel between floors where elevators may not be available, get around neighborhoods easily, and transport equipment and art supplies typically not exceeding 10 pounds.
