On the Boards, Seattle’s home for contemporary dance, theater and multidisciplinary performance, is looking for a visionary Artistic Director to lead this internationallyrecognized organization in presenting risk-taking contemporary performance. The Artistic Director will build on the organization’s history of innovation as a home for regional and international contemporary art. This full-time position will be a valued liaison to the executive and finance committees of the Board of Directors while also serving as part of the leadership team of a nonprofit 501(c)3 contemporary arts center.


Artistic Director Key Responsibilities:

Supervises: Associate Producer, Director of Program Management, Production Manager, and OntheBoards.tv

Leads with: Executive Director and Director of Finance and Operations

Reports to: Board of Directors

● Oversees all aspects of artistic programming, exhibiting On the Boards’ values and commitment to racial and social equity and risk taking through the curation of the annual season as well as special events; traveling nationally and internationally for research purposes, creating contextual materials and information, and creating long-term programmatic vision.

● Provides artistic and management oversight of NW New Works Festival, Open Studio, Performance Production Program, and other artistic programs.

● Oversees OntheBoards.tv and develops a sustainable model for this program.

● Provides production and advocacy support to artists.

● Creates contextual programs and informational materials for website, board meetings, fundraising initiatives, press releases, pre- and post- performance activities, and outside forums to help engage the community with the art presented.

● Plays active leadership role in the regional and national field of contemporary performance.

● Is a public face for On the Boards, and represents On the Boards in the local, national, and international performance communities.

● In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Director of Finance and Operations: o Serves as a staff lead and liaison for the Board of Directors, ensuring compliance with bylaws and Board handbook policies.

  • Successfully presents all artistic programs internally and externally.
  • Provides leadership in all major aspects of the organization
  • Develops and executes policy and plans (strategic and annual) that serve the organization’s mission, in concert with the leadership team and the Board of Directors.
  • Plans domestic and international Board trips to see new performance work.

Artistic Director Qualifications:

This position requires a knowledgeable leader with significant curatorial or arts presentation experience. Strong skills in organizational leadership and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within all aspects of an organization are necessary. Candidates will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit with multiple programs.

Other qualifications include:

● Demonstrated commitment to the principles of racial equity and broadening access to and engagement with the arts.

● A familiarity with the open-ended nature of working in a non-profit or being in an artistic process.

● Clarity of artistic vision with a passion for contemporary performance. A demonstrated strong track record of professional contemporary performance production.

● A radical imagination for big ideas.

● A deep understanding of trends and innovations in contemporary performance and art.

● Proven ability to program, commission and support the development of new works combined with an ability to facilitate in-process feedback for artists.

● Proven ability to attract and collaborate with artists of the highest caliber.

● Ability to work with a team to support fundraising efforts. Good knowledge of the performing arts industry and arts funding. An ability to think of lean budgets as opportunities to innovate, as one of many challenges to overcome to achieve the aforementioned radical artistic vision.

● An awareness of holistic organizational dynamics fueled by an ability to inspire and motivate others; an ability to delegate, negotiate, and resolve conflict.

● Resilience and responsiveness to the changing external environment.

● Last, but not least, a sense of humor.


Artistic Director Education/Experience/Skills Required:

● Minimum five years of experience with a strong track record in producing dance, theatre or multidisciplinary art.

● Demonstrated success working with artists to develop new work and curate diverse performances.

● Leadership experience in any type of arts organization or community environment.

● Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

● Fundraising experience desired.

● Familiarity with popular social media platforms preferred.

● Proficient in modern office software and technology.
